French M1897 75mm Cannon - Askari Miniatures - 28mm

This awesome kit is very easy to build, sturdy, and a joy to paint. In my humble opinion this model is excellent and will provide a more than reasonable facsimile on the tabletop.
However, It has been replaced by a newer version which has new wheels with the proper number of spokes and a few more parts for variations. I’ve since gotten the new model and will be building it shortly.

My references for this project.

Here’s the model with (2) Askari French Marine gun crews and a French Naval Landing gun crew for scale. All of my gun crews are (4) men as per my go to rules set The Sword And The Flame. These crews will see much action across both Asia and Africa!

French Colonial Marine Gunners 1900 - Askari Minis

Artillery crew of the French Marines. These are 28mm figures by Askari Miniatures.

I painted them in the khaki uniforms for a buddy of mine Last Stand Dan for use in his Indochina games. I painted two gun crews, to differentiate them I painted one crew with white trousers and one crew with khaki trousers. These will be used as 4 man gun crews for TSATF, The Sword And The Flame and TMWWBK, The Men Who Would Be Kings imperial troops.

Here’s my motivation and reference for the above gun crew officer.

Pallet

Uniform: Americana -Khaki Tan

Sun helmet: Craft Smart - Khaki

Haversack: Delta Ceramcoat  - Trail Tan

Puttees: Delta Ceramcoat - Trail Tan

Boots & Belt: Delta Ceramcoat - Black

Blue Trousers: Poly Scale Deck Blue with Poly Scale - Israeli Blue highlights.

White Trousers: Poly Scale - Light Grey then Vallejo- Off White

*There is no wash or dip on these figs as I left them for Dan to dip so as to better match his existing troops.

Here’s the write up for these figures from the Askari Miniatures website.

The French overseas colonies (except Algeria) were managed by the Ministry of the Marine (Navy). The troops they owned were either natives (Tirailleurs) or Europeans (Marines).

This European crew is dressed in the khaki uniforms that they wore c.1900. These troops would have manned shore installations or been on campaign in places like Madagascar, Indo-china, or West Africa.

They used the 80mm de Bange Mountain Gun.

Here is the same crew I painted with the Askari Minis 80mm de Bange Mountain Gun. This particular gun model is the older version and has since been replaced with an upgraded model.

For earlier period uniforms, paint them with dark blue blouses and white trousers. See FR-17 for a mixed European-Senegalais crew.

Set consists of 4 figures as shown.

Tuareg Command - AHPC #11 - Level-2, Chamber-2, "Shrine" - Tuaregs

My next entry for the 11th Annual Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge are these Tuareg figures. The premise is the Shrine. In this chamber the "Shrine" is the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. A Tuareg Mullah and faithful followers make up this entry.

I experimented with colors using washes and highlighting as I just wasn't quite happy and satisfied with the colors out of the pots. I use acrylic paints from Polly Scale, Vallejo, and the craft store paints. That being said, I am quite pleased at how they came out and am really looking forward to painting the stock piles of 28mm lead Tuareg figures I have from Castway Arts and Askari Minis.

Though they aren't really Tuareg castings I have painted them up as such for my French Colonial games. These will be used as a command group for my favored colonial rules set, TSATF, The Sword And The Flame. The Mullah will be the Tribal Chief for the (3) clans in his tribe.

Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge #11 - Level 2 - Chamber 1 - Adventure's Landing

Here's another entry of mine for the AHPC #11.

The dark steaming jungle lies directly to port, the sunlight dances off the clear, shimmering, and bright aqua surf. The young LT wonders if this beach landing be contested or will it be a cake walk as his commander boasted? As the oarsmen struggle against the heat and humidity the French Naval Landing artillerists are cursing their wool uniforms. They soon, like the Legionnaires already inland, will discard the unwanted and inappropriate items and exchange them for locally made lighter fabrics. The excessive humidity deteriorates the European theatre gear rather quickly.

For this beach landing challenge I have chosen a French Naval Landing gun crew from Askari Minis. They are in the 1890's -1910's Naval Uniforms and are kitted out for a landing party in support of French Marines, Sailors, and Legionnaires fighting the infamous Black Flag Pirates of Tonkin. (I have Black Flag gunners on the painting table now!)

The small artillery piece is a French Mountain Gun, also from Askari Minis. However, this model is about 20 years old, Al has since made an even better retooled version of this gun that I will surely have to get. Askari Minis new retooled gun link.

I've painted this crew for my buddy Dan from the Last Stand Boatyard to be used for my favorite rules set The Sword And The Flame, though he's also a fan of the rules set, The Men Who Would Be Kings.

Chamber 20 pts, (4) 28mm figs x 5 pts = 20, (1) 28mm gun x 10 pts (it's a small gun, possibly only worth 5 pts?) - Total for this chamber: 50 Pts

What fine-looking Tars. As for the scoring, a crew-served-weapon is a crew-served-weapon ang gets 10 points if it's 28mm!

GRINGO 40'S 28mm - Tonkin 1885 Range - Figure Size Comparisons

French Foreign Legion 1885

This post is a size comparison of these 3 figures with several other colonial type figures by several different manufacturers.

Gringo 40's - French Foreign Legionnaires - 1885, from left to right, codes: FTF-04, FTF-02, FTF-03.
http://www.gringo40s.com/french-foreign-legion-1885.html

I'm currently painting up some of these lovely figures for a web friend of mine. We are both interested in the Tonkin campaign and enjoy collecting miniature figures. I traded him some lead for my painting services. I plan on painting them with navy jerseys, white pants, white pith helmet, and black webbing for service in the start of the Tonkin campaign 1885.

As soon as I opened up the box of figures I immediately noticed how large these figures are. They are seriously large but are not too large to be used together with other figs on a gaming table once painted and based. That being said I will only use them in units by themselves with other Gringo 40’s as some of the other ranges are just too small to mix well. However I’m confident these awesomely detailed figs can be used with most of the currently available 28mm figs on the same table but in separate units as stated, so I decided to undertake a size comparison with several of the other manufacturer's figs I have in my eternal lead pile waiting to be painted.

Whether you agree with my assessment or not, the Gringo 40’s Tonkin range is so extensive that even if you don’t think that these figs can be used alongside other 28mm figs it won’t matter because this range alone has all the figures one would need to game this campaign on both sides.

Before I post the comparison pics I want to say that the detail on these figs is crisp and clean with MINOR flash and minimal mold lines making the prep and clean up a breeze. This being my first hands on introduction to Gringo 40’s figs, save for the amazing Raisuli figure my buddy the Mad Guru of the Maiwand Day http://maiwandday.blogspot.com/ blog fame gave me, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. In addition the uniform and equipment detail  of these figures are spot on historically correct. For example, these FFL figs are wearing naval troop jerseys as the original classic FFL uniforms we all know and love which are made of wool rapidly deteriorated in the extreme humidity of SE Asia. Thus they had to borrow bits of uniforms and kit from the naval troops already in theatre. They figs are also kitted out in the locally manufactured oversized pith helmets.

In the pics you will notice that the casted fig bases are taller / thicker than the other manufacturers figs. Grinding these down quite a bit will make them fit in even better with other mfgrs. Placing them on thinner bases would help as well. They are also thicker and bulker than the other mfgrs but once again, when painted, based, and in action on the table the difference is negligible in my humble opinion.

These figures also have great possibilities for other theatres and campaigns. I definitely intend on getting the full range of these great figs!

The following pics show the Legion figs I’m working on next to many different manufacturers. All figure manufacturer's names are from left to right.
